Outlining a Title

I hope you had a great weekend.  I thought I would start this week off with a tutorial.  I am all about trying to find different ways of utilizing the many tools that are available in Photoshop.  There are a lot of unique effects you can bring to a title without having to purchase anything.  I LOVE that!  I recently used this technique on one of my pages and thought you might like to see how easy it is to do this.

1) Here is my page of my son and his Star Wars figurines.  I love these pictures.  They really capture the stage he is in right now.  You can see that I have some white space....well, actually black space just above the gray band on the bottom.  I thought it would be a great place to put my title and I want my title to go along with the Star Wars theme so I decided to outline it.

2)  Using my text tool, I created a new layer and typed in my title.  I used "Impact" as my font...it is one of my favorites.  I adjusted the size of my font to 95 pt.  You can see that I also adjusted the spacing between the letters to give them some breathing room.

3) After I typed my title, I activated the marching ants around the title by left clicking with my mouse and hitting Control (PC)/Command (Mac).  I created a new layer above the title and then turned the eye icon of the title off so I couldn't see it any longer.

4) With my new layer above my title active, I went to "Edit" on the top menu bar, and then "Stroke".  I entered a value of 6 pixels with the color white and centered and clicked "OK".  Control (PC)/Command (Mac) + "D" to deactivate the marching ants.

5) This is what my finished page looked like and the title work took me less than two minutes to do.

This is a very simple technique.  If you haven't tried it before, I want to encourage you to give it a go.

All products are from Designer Digitals.

I also want to take this opportunity to tell you that Pattie Knox's "More Digital Scrapbooking Essentials Class" starts on Thursday at Creative Passion and you don't want to miss it.   Pattie's knowledge of Photoshop is simply AMAZING and her classes are full of great tips and techniques.  Let's just say that I've been having a ball creating my own brushes this week based on her tutorials!  I hope you take advantage of this opportunity...I know you will be glad that you did!

Thanks for stopping by and have a great day!

  3. Another fun quick tutorial.
Question this tutorial is in photoshp, maybe the last one was also, is there away to space in Elements? Pattie's class also says photoshop, but isn't it done in some version of elements?
